This charming tale reminds us that we can all find happiness if we lean on and support each other.

My Review

Based on the true story of the author and her adopted son, Mickey on the Move shows us the way inside the world of a 6th grader who has to wear cochlear impants to help him receive and process sounds. Just like any kid starting a new school, Mickey needs to make certain adjustments to his new surroundings, including challenges caused by the fact that he hears things differently than his classmates. Luckily, he's got a wonderful support team consisting of his mother, teacher, and friends. Together, they figure out the best solution to help Mickey's school life become smoother and more successful.

Mickey is a very inspiring character. He is smart, creative, confident, friendly, sporty and has a very positive attitude toward life. Just like any other kid in the neighborhood, he bikes to school, and learns reading, math, and all the other subjects at school. After school, he goes to soccer practice, tennis, and swimming lessons. He loves painting and wants to become a police officer to help those in need.

The book is educational in that it provides knowledge about cochlear implants and about life of children with special needs. It encourages all kids not to be afraid to reach out and ask for help when necessary. It shows how love and support can help conquer challenges. It also teaches about kindness, compassion, creative thinking, problem-solving, and how to communicate your needs and adapt to a new environment. Although the book focuses on a child with hearing impairment, its messages are relevant to everyone.
