Based on a true story, this non-fiction book follows a special Hawaiian monk seal named Honey Girl, as she got seriously injured by fishing gear and then rescued by scientists. The storytelling is smooth and straightforward. The readers get to know a lot of interesting facts about endangered Hawaiian monk seals while they "watch" Honey Girl have an operation, gradually recover, and give birth to two more pups. The realistic and detailed illustrations help bring the book to life. By reading the story, I can virtually feel her pain or joy as Honey Girl experienced it!
My favorite feature of the book is that it concludes with a "For Creative Minds" section, which offers extra reading material for those who are eager to learn more about Hawaiian monk seals in a more systematic way, including their life cycle, why they are endangered, what we can do to protect them, along with some fun facts about the species. The publisher's website also provides reading comprehension quizzes to help reinforce the most important messages from the story. What we teach our children today are likely to have a ripple effect across the generations to come. Honey Girl: The Hawaiian Monk Seal makes a great book to start with if you would like to cultivate your kiddo's love for endangered animals.
