Book Review: If You Were Me and Lived In ... Italy
Travel is generally acknowledged as a great way to broaden our minds as we gain firsthand experience with different cultures and interact with local people. But when it is not yet possible to travel around the world physically, we may as well learn something important and interesting about another country by taking a virtual tour. Award-winning author Carole P. Roman proves to be the perfect tour guide for curious children eager to explore the rest of the world!
In If you were me and lived in...Italy, the latest addition to the series, Carole shows her young readers what life could be like in Italy if they were local residents. The book starts with a map of Italy suggesting the fun shape of the country and the origin of its nickname "the boot". After a brief introduction to Italy's unique history and geography, the book turns its focus to various aspects of a typical Italian's everyday life, including popular names, food, sports, holidays, family traditions, places of interest, and more.
The book has a great balance between text and pictures. The colorful and cute illustrations nicely complement the fun facts covered in the text. I love that the author raises interesting questions throughout the book to make the reading experience more interactive. The answers are often hidden in the pictures, rather than provided in a more straightforward fashion. Readers can learn quite a few commonly used Italian words from the book, thanks to the in-text pronunciation guide and the helpful context. I also love that the book includes a glossary that not only offers simple explanation for words that kids may find difficult or unfamiliar, but also tells them how to pronounce those words. This feature makes it easy for kids to read more independently. I'd highly recommend this book, along with the series, to parents who would like to spark their children's interest in international travel and in cultures around the world.
