Miss Priss On and Off the CourtAbout the Book

Priscilla Penelope Paxton is a witty ten year old whose inter-ests and curiosity land her in, sometimes, sticky situations. Dance classes, Girl Scouts, school assignments, friends and hanging out at her family's drug store, and the local Piggly Wiggly would leave any other person with no time for any-thing else.

Yet, the thrill of basketball and joining the Little Dribblers finds its way into Miss Priss' heart. Though this interest will prove to be a dream that requires overcoming the greatest of challenges; Mom’s opposition. A task that will require ingenuity, perseverance and a little help from some loved ones.

My Review

I'm very happy to have received a copy of Miss Priss: On and Off the Court for review. It is an entertaining and heart-warming read that is worth every minute I spent on it. The story is told with a great sense of humor from the perspective of a ten-year-old girl. I couldn't help but smiling the whole time I was reading the book, except for the moment when Priscilla finally convinced her mom of her talent for basketball - I was in tears before I knew it! The main character Priscilla (Miss Priss) feels so real and relatable, with her unique personality, her own set of strengths and weaknesses, and her well-intentioned actions contrasted by the series of mishaps that they led to.

This is an inspiring coming-of-age story that follows an opinionated, strong-willed, self-motivated teenager as she grows through her mistakes, discovers her passion, sets her goal, and makes every effort to follow her dream. As the story progresses, it touches upon important topics like friendship, family, team work, sportsmanship, anti-bullying, and taking responsibility for one's own actions. My favorite line from the book is the words of encouragement from Priscilla's dad: "Sometimes you just have to stick up for what you believe in and keep working at it until your dreams come true."

As my son plays on a basketball team, he's really excited to read this book, especially the lively scenes of Priscilla and her teammates practicing and playing in the championship game. I'd highly recommend Miss Priss: On and Off the Court to all tweens and teens looking to fight for their dreams or to find out what they are passionate about.
