Heart of Haiti Collection Review & Giveaway

Heart of Haiti is an extension of Macy's "Shop for A Better World" initiative born out of a partnership with Fair Winds Trading and Brand Aid Haiti. Founded on the principle of "Trade not Aid", "The Shop for A Better World" creative team gathers artists from all over Haiti to develop and sell their handcrafted works in over 25 Macy's storefront locations across the U.S. and on macys.com.

The proceeds earned from the sale of Heart of Haiti products have dramatically improved the lives of the artists and their families, giving them the ability to afford better nutrition, education and healthcare. The craftsmanship and technique behind these works of art, ranging from papier mache vases to hand cut metal frames & wall hangings, is truly remarkable. The collection is made entirely from recycled and sustainable items such as old cement bags, cardboard, oil drums & local gommier wood.

Macy's has kindly offered me two items from the Heart of Haiti Collection for review: a heart pendant and a Songbird picture frame. Both items are made by Serge Jolimeau and his collective of young artists. As a world-renowned metal artist, Serge Jolimeau has trained hundreds of young apprentices over the years, giving them the gift of art and the ability to earn a living wage. He also presides over the guild organization (ADAAC) that links and guides the many local artisan ateliers.

Each item from the Heart of Haiti Collection is a unique work of art made by hand. It's hard to believe that these beautiful pieces of artwork were once nothing but a pile of raw scrap metal. I'm deeply impressed by the exquisite craftsmanship displayed by the Songbird picture frame. Every songbird surrounding the frame has a vivid, distinct expression and posture. The somewhat irregular shape of the frame gives us the feel of nature, life, and willpower.

The Heart of Haiti Collection is highly affordable, compared to other handmade products on the market. A portion of every purchase will directly benefit artisans in Haiti, who are working hard to rebuild their homes and support their families. Be sure to check out Heart of Haiti next time you shop for one-of-a-kind home decor. You may meet some of the artists and the pieces they created here.
