My Review:
Blending elements of adventure, mystery, fantasy and spirituality, Al's Journey is an inspiring and thought-provoking parable about growth, self-discovery, purpose in life and the incredible value of intergenerational relationships.
Al is a young orphan who belongs to a tribe engrossed in the hunt for gold. His grandfather, the tribe's shaman who lives alone in the hut at the top of the mountain, travels down every day to heal the people and train Al to be his successor. On his 100th birthday, the wise man decides that it is time to pass the torch on to Al, who must climb the summit without help and be the first to enter the shaman's hut. Al's journey begins, with the pouch of magic water grandfather gives him and with the path ahead lit up by fireflies transformed from magic water drops. He grows noticeably each time he takes a sip from the pouch. The climb becomes more challenging too. Will he make it to the mountain top and complete his training?
Woven with clever symbols and metaphors, the story shows the benefits and advantages of growing up alongside the pains and challenges associated with the process. As they follow Al's journey, young readers witness his growth in both physical strength and mental toughness. The changes in his body lead to the shift in his role as a follower of his grandfather to a leader, a protector and a caregiver. Greater capabilities come with greater responsibilities. As the new shaman, Al is expected to carry on his grandfather's legacy and to continue his efforts to heal the people. His grandfather's warning to "never forget that your life on Earth is just a dash between two dates" urges us to make the best use of our precious time to focus on what really matters, rather than material gains.
Besides its gripping plotline and meaningful messages, the book impresses the readers with its original style of illustration. With the change of light and the contrast between dark and bright colors, the paintings accentuate Al's transformation, the arduousness of his journey, and the invisible but strong bond between Al and his grandfather.
Written with wisdom and depth, Al's Journey makes an insightful read for youngsters to savor and share with their parents and grandparents.

Al’s Journey is a magical tale about an orphan boy and his wise grandfather, the shaman of a gold-obsessed tribe that disregarded eating and sleeping while searching for the yellow metal. On his 100th birthday, the shaman announces to Al that it is time for him to begin his own life journey. The boy must climb the mountain alone to reach the roofless sacred hut of the old shaman, where he can ask God crucial questions. As Al makes his way up the mountain peak guided by mystical fireflies, he faces challenges that test his courage and strength. When he finally reaches the summit, Al asks the creator profound questions about the true meaning of life. The valuable experience of the voyage and the response of the supreme being help Al grow mentally, emotionally, and physically overnight and become the healer his tribe needs.
